According to the American Nurses Association, nursing is defined as "the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations." Professional nurses have the designation of Registered Nurse (RN), which is achieved through the completion of a rigorous educational program and successfully passing a licensing examination. Nurses may have associate, baccalaureate, master's or doctorate degrees. SRJC prepares professional nurses at the associate degree level.

Professional nursing is both a science and an art. The Registered Nurse integrates scientific knowledge with the art of caring with the skills of perceptive and therapeutic communication. RNs provide physical and emotional care and support to people and families who are unable to care for themselves. They also assist the patient and family in attaining the knowledge and skills needed to maximize their health and manage their disease. They are essential members of the health-care team. To achieve these essential goals, the SRJC ADN program is a very rigorous, full-time professional nursing program.

The SRJC Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program is one of the top ADN programs in California. Since beginning in 1959, the program has enjoyed a wonderful working relationship with numerous clinical agencies in Sonoma County. Approximately 60 new students are admitted each fall and spring semester. Our nursing students come from varied educational and culturally diverse backgrounds and life experiences. Nurses that graduate from our program are prepared to work in a variety of health care settings. The SRJC ADN nursing program is fully accredited as a prelicensure RN program by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN).
